Paradise Shores S/V Betsy in Vandemere Creek
Oriental Cup Sponsors S/V Betsy in Vandemere Creek
Sunday July 8, 2007
Sometimes living in Pamlico County can just wear you out, in a good way. This is just few activities you  can look forward to, living in Port Vandemere.  In the last week we had the Oriental Cup Regatta, in which Port Vandemere was a sponsor and competitor. We did ok, but Betsy, my Hunter 30 was a little nervous and decided to make life a little harder for her crew. And we almost got T-boned, I was on Starboard!, but it didn’t seem to matter for the ‘unnamed’ crew from New Bern. All in good sport I suppose. It was a wonderful weekend with a great band and plenty of dancing and socializing.Next we had the 4th of July party at Paradise Shores. Team Port Vandemere decided to cruise there and dinghy into the festivities. Paul and Rose hosted a wonderful gathering with a potluck dinner and fireworks to boot. The next morning we  headed off to Vandemere Creek. After about a 3 hour sail from Broad Creek we easily navigated the entrance and drooped the hook in front of lot 18. (see photo) and had a nice afternoon with future owners Mark and Deborah.  After a wonderful swim in Vandemere Creek and a nice dinner we decided to do something crazy and sail out of the channel at night. After all, there will be a lot of future boaters that will want to do some night sailing or maybe return home from cruising when its dark. So we thought what a good opportunity to try it first.  All went fine, almost. We drifted a little out of the channel towards the fish house when my spot light refused to work  and got into some mud. No problem, I just let the jib out, got a little heal and off we went.  After that it was easy to see the lighted markers in the Bay River. We sailed for about 2 hours and dropped the hook into Bonner Bay.Finally, This weekend was the annual Croaker Festival. A much anticipated holiday, with parade, carnival, arts and crafts booths and fireworks. Some might think living in a small town could be Boring, but as you can Pamlico County is anything but!
