Note from our Contractor, new blog in process

Tuesday February 19, 2008
Over the next week I will be converting the blog over to ‘Wordpress’! This will give us increased functionality, the ability to make comments, categorize and allow me to expand my range of subjects. So keep checking back to see our new Port Vandemere blog take shape! I got a note from John Hardy this morning updating me on the construction. Here are some excerpts from that note:

Edana & Bret… This month we have installed sand and ABC stone on Royal Shoal Lane. (970 CY of Undercut/Back fill of Unsuitable Material)We have excavated ditches to the end of Shell Castle.Next month we will be trying to proof roll and install ABC on Shell Castle up to +/- station 7+50. I am sure from we are going to have to undercut and install sand from there to the end cul-de-sac….At that time some decisions will have to be made concerning seeding of the roadway.I still am trying to wait on starting the excavation of the alternate pond adjacent to Lots 1-7. Placement of the excess material is crucial to determine the cost of constructing this pond.I wonder if you want us to do any work for the entrance road of the proposed club house/marina or stub out a entrance for Frying Pan Rd? Please discuss this and let me know so I may work in that direction if necessary. Thanks John Hardy"e;

Looks like more soil/sand/gravel and excavating for March and April and possibly starting on the foundation of the Clubhouse and utility installation following that.

Lyle and Shirleys Restaurant

Last week during my hike around PV to inspect what’s new, I was getting over the flu. After walking the property for about an hour I was exhausted mostly due to not eating  anything for a week. To cure this problem I decided that I needed some comfort food. There is no place better in Pamlico county to get comfort food than Lyle and Shirley’s restaurant in Lowland, just down the road from Port Vandemere. All the seafood is local and fresh, their hush puppy’s are addictive, and a plate of fried oysters, mash potatoes/gravy and green beans will put some vitality back into you after a week with the flu. You can even go by water! since the restaurant is a marina too. The fish selection changes daily to do what is biting. But she often serves spot, trout, croaker (which is delish!), bluefish and other local favorites. It may be a little hard to find at first, but its well worth a few wrong turns!

Sailor inspects the pond

Our Lab, ‘Sailor’ (who doesn’t like sailboats) has fully approved the pond after a careful inspection. Its filled in another foot or two since this picture and is looking nice. I’ve been researching aeration systems and trying to pick what will work best. I’ve also been thinking about the new ‘ecosystem’ we’re creating and trying to decide which flora/fauna should be introduced. They’ll be birds/frogs/turtles etc, with no help from us. There are a few native varieties of waterlilies  to provide shade and cover for the fish. We have a koi pond that came with our house, so I’m very aware of how this system works and what sort of balance is needed to keep it crystal clear and healthy. Its good to have it dug early so over the next year it can develop  and by the time you will be enjoying it, the pond should have matured nicely.
